Nearly every single type of the most popular vines in the world are planted in South Africa. The choice extends from Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon to Malbec and Merlot, to Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz. Over and above the South African’s own variety Pinotage is very popular worldwide and very much admired by wine lovers.
Up until the 20th Century the Steen was the dominant vine, that is to say the Chenin Blanc from France. Today Chenin Blanc plays a very important role amongst the white blends. Sauvignon Blanc is becoming more and more important as a fruity fresh taste and also Chardonnay , wooded and unwooded in a BARRIQUE barrel. Generally speaking red wine is even more important than white wine, especially Cabernet Sauvignon and more than ever Shiraz. Pinotage is gaining in popularity especially amongst the more expensive wines as the great strength and flavour is recognized.
Our Choice of Pinotage Wines:
Pinotage is not the name of a blend or something like that, it is the name of South Africa’s signature variety which is a clone of Pinot Noir and Cinsault (known in South Africa as Hermitage), a cross, not a hybrid. This is seldom grown in other countries. A Pinotage produced wine tastes a bit like plums, it is meaty and is not free of problems. It was bred by Professor Abraham Isaak Perold, the first Professor of Viticulture at Stellenbosch University, in the year 1924. He was attempting to combine the robust Cinsault with Pinot Noir, a grape that can make excellent wine but can be very difficult to grow. A classic Pinotage is a deep red wine dominated by smoky, earthy flavors and hints of black berries, sometimes with notes of bananas and tropical fruit. However a Pinotage wine can also be very bitter if the Wine Master produces the wine from underdeveloped fruit.
Pinotage is much more versatile, be it for rose, for lighter, or reasonable and boozing red wines or for strong, relatively expensive, voluminous wines which mature for years in the oak barrels and then develop in a very positive manner. Pinotage is often blended with other red cultivars (30-70% in Cape Blends) and also made into red sparkling wine.
In South Africa Pinotage makes up nearly 8% of the vineyard area and is considered a symbol of the country's distinctive winemaking traditions: from easy-drinking wine and light rose to barrel-fermented wine intended for further maturation in the cellar and the bottle. This wine is very dependent on the skill and the personal style of the winemaker.
